Location description

Taken from the steps to Arthur’s Seat, this portrait looks out over the dramatic basalt cliffs of Salisbury Crags - the eroded edge of a 340-million-year-old volcanic sill - towards the city. Edinburgh Castle and the Old Town spires juxtapose the rugged cliff line. The viewpoint involves a moderate uphill on an impressive rock stairway, half way up to Arthur’s Seat summit. Stopping to take this shot is a welcome break during the challenging ascent.

Shooting notes

Looking west-north-west, this shot favours late morning in summertime, or late afternoon in winter when side-light illuminates the Crags and distant city. Wide shots or closer cropped shots both work well to take in the grandeur of the view. This composition is completely possible from the designated paths, so there is no need to endanger yourself. Keep well back from the edges, especially in wind, and always take care to watch your footing on the worn paths.
