Location description

Ramsay Lane is a quiet, characterful corner of the Old Town located just below Edinburgh Castle. This view shows one of two striking red-painted external staircases with elegant wrought-iron railings. Set just off the steep lane way between the Royal Mile and the front of the New College building, stopping here to take a photo can offer a well-earned respite in the short, sharp ascent from the Mound. This is a busy lane though nobody tends to linger and vehicles rarely block the shot.

Shooting notes

This daytime shot works in any season, though be aware these are residential properties and you should be respectful of privacy and space. Soft, diffused light suits the stone buildings and staircase to avoid harsh shadows. A relatively wide lens is required, so walk a few yards further up the hill to take the shot, ensuring that you keep the camera level with the centre of the frame and avoid perspective distortion.
