Location description

This portrait frame captures a classic end of terrace building on Great King Street in the city’s New Town. The image highlights the ordered Georgian symmetry of the area which is now a UNESCO World Heritage area together with the city’s Old Town and West End. Located on the corner of Dundas and Great King Streets, this residential building is fairly accessible, as is the entire area, and it’s a great place to walk around.

Shooting notes

The New Town buildings can really come alive at golden hour, when low sun spreads warm light across the sandstone and brings out the texture of the dressed stone. Shooting square-on keeps the architecture true, although correcting perspective distortion will be required if you want to create a square composition like this. This image was taken from the pavement. Choose a quiet moment when parked cars and passers-by are minimal for the cleanest result.
