Location description
This abstract wide angle view looks straight up inside the surviving frame of the Granton gas holder on Edinburgh’s northern waterfront. A landmark of the Granton gasworks since the early twentieth century, the structure is now a centrepiece of the area’s regeneration and has been developed into a public park. Access is easy, although parking is not as readily available as you might expect in the area. There is however a large supermarket car park nearby.
Shooting notes
This impressive gasworks structure is shot here under a clear, cloudless sky, but it works well in various conditions as the contrast of the steel and sky changes significantly with the colour and light. A super-wide lens is what makes the shot so abstract here, exaggerating the convergence of the girders and taking in the complete circular frame. Shooting up from outside the frame also works well and perspective distortion here adds to the overall aesthetic.
