Location description

Portencross is a coastal hamlet on the Ayrshire coast, where a weathered concrete pier extends into the Firth of Clyde and offers views directly across to the hills on the Isle of Arran. Nearby stands the ruins of Portencross Castle, a 14th-century stronghold that adds historical context to this quiet stretch of coastline. There is a sizeable car park a short walk from the pier.

Shooting notes

Sunset is an ideal shooting time here, as the camera faces due west. This shot is taken looking directly along the pier towards Arran, where the setting sun accentuates the dramatic silhouettes of Goat Fell and the surrounding hills. A long exposure smooths the Clyde waters and gives the image a calm, ethereal quality. The pier is easily reached with flat ground and no significant walk required. Setting your tripod in the centre of the pier helps converging lines draw the viewer’s eye into the distance, and the symmetry helps balance the composition.
