Location description
Lynn Falls is a hidden gem tucked away near the town of Dalry in North Ayrshire. The waterfall drops over a broad, dark rock face into a boulder-strewn river below. The falls are reached via a nature trail (circular walk route available), with some uphill sections — sturdy footwear is recommended as the path can be muddy and slippery near the water. There is ample parking at the Lynn Bridge Carpark. The location is quiet with few visitors, so you can take your time with compositions.
Shooting notes
Overcast days are ideal, as the dense tree canopy creates dappled light that produces harsh contrast in direct sunshine. Late spring through summer and autumn offer the best conditions — lush green foliage in summer gives way to warm amber tones in autumn. Moss-covered rocks and fallen branches line the riverbed, adding layers of natural texture to the foreground. A long exposure on a tripod will give the falling water a smooth, silky quality. Getting low can add drama to the foreground.
In short
Cloudy and overcast makes for good waterfall images
