Location description
Cockburn Street sweeps in a graceful cobbled curve through the medieval closes of Edinburgh’s Old Town to link the Royal Mile with Waverley Station. The street is mostly pedestrianised and its bars, restaurants, cafés, shops and galleries are a hive of activity. This is right in the heart of the Old Town so it is easily accessible, but be aware this area will be incredibly busy throughout the day and late into the evening also.
Shooting notes
Late evening when the setting sun catches the buildings at the top of the street helps to warm the scene, although this also works well if it is a grey day too because the shapes of the buildings and cobbles work well in neutral shades or even in black and white. Capturing this shot without many people in the frame helps to draw viewers attention to the elegant cobbles and beautiful buildings. Getting low with your camera will also help to bring the cobbles into the frame with greater presence and lead the viewer’s eyes upward into the frame.
