Location description
Moored in a former lock at Leith’s historic docks, the Fingal is a converted lighthouse tender now serving as a floating luxury hotel. Shot from low at the bow at the end of the dock, the ship exterior is easily accessible with plenty room to take images. Fingal is located across the tram tracks on Ocean Drive a few minutes walk from the Leith Shore and lots of nearby photo locations.
Shooting notes
Workable in any season since the ship is in use all year round. A clear-skied morning works well but the shot looks great on moody atmospheric days or in early morning mist too. A super-wide lens framing exaggerates the bow and gives the shot presence, although a tighter lens crop works but doesn’t take in the full mast and reflection. A polariser will deepen the blue sky and cut surface glare. The image above was taken hand held, but a few second exposure on a tripod would smooth out the water a bit more. Crowds are not an issue as it is a fairly low traffic environment. Watch your footing on the dock edge and remember to try some close up details and alternate views for fun.
