Golden Hour Edinburgh

The Dugald Stewart Monument has graced the city skyline atop Calton Hill since its completion in 1831. Designed by architect William Henry Playfair, it is a memorial to Scottish philosopher and mathematician Dugald Stewart (1753-1828). The shot location is elevated at the viewpoint outside Observatory House.

Golden light on the right side of the Monument is possible in the spring and summer months when the sunset position is further north. If you position your camera correctly then the pillars in the Monument will appear symmetrical. This helps the balance of this element of the image, although not essential. Note: Castle in the far distance is overlapped by the Balmoral clock tower. This is a busy scene, so not an issue, but if zooming in for a crop frame, there is a better spot in front of the monument (Ref: #02041).
