Description du lieu

The Bass Rock is a volcanic plug rising dramatically from the Firth of Forth, approximately 2kms off the coast near North Berwick. Home to the world’s largest colony of Northern gannets, the rock appears white-capped from the huge volumes of birds during breeding season – like a lost iceberg floating in the Forth. A lighthouse clings to the south face and chapel ruins on the open ridge above add human history to this unique natural landmark. The photo is taken from an elevated position next to a coastal café.

Notes de prise de vue

Summer is the best season, when the gannet colony is at its peak. The composition captures the rock sitting in a bright blue sea with the outline of the Isle of May visible on the distant horizon. A longer telephoto lens is used here allowing the rock to fill the frame. Calm, clear days are ideal with a polarising filter to help bring out the blues. An easy handheld shot when conditions permit.
