Location description

At the Cramond shore, a line of concrete pylons stride out along a tidal causeway path toward Cramond Island. Built during the Second World War as an anti-boat boom to block enemy craft from the area, the weathered triangular relics now make a striking sculpture that leads the eye to the nearby island a kilometre away. The tidal path can be accessed for around 2 hours either side of low tide. Ample parking is located nearby as this is a popular spot at the beginning of the promenade that leads all the way to Granton. Expect plenty of people around, especially on clear sunny evenings.

Shooting notes

Clear evening and golden hour light suits this composition to set the concrete pylons aglow. The photo above is taken once the causeway is completely covered, which creates a different feel to your shot than taking it when it is exposed. It’s a matter of preference what sort of image you are going for. The causeway draws a steady stream of visitors and the incoming tide moves exceptionally fast, however the rising tide generally clears the walkers from your frame, especially when shooting at the waterline. WARNING: this is a genuine tidal cut-off; never walk out toward the island on a rising tide. Take note of the tidal times and warnings posted at the causeway. This shot is taken safely from the breakwater.
